For the school of tomorrow

Patrons*innen: Teachers of the IGS Erwin Fischer,

Commission: "We want an artistic expression for the performance that we provide for society on a daily basis. That is why we have commissioned a project that makes our school visible and tangible as a positive place. We expect a strong sign that will have an effect on the urban society and at the same time strengthen the local actors".

The Erwin Fischer comprehensive school performs valuable integration work in the Schönwalde I quarter of Greifswald. With a lot of energy and great cohesion, its college has created a positive, supportive place in the former GDR large housing estate, which once provided sought-after living space for the energy combine, but today also has to cope with many social problems.

But although the new building, which has just been completed, also spatially underlines and symbolically enhances the innovative school concept with its inclusionary approach, the public still perceives the school and its surroundings as a "social hotspot". Pupils only discover the qualities of their educational institution when they start attending the school. The daily ambition of the college to offer equal opportunities and individual support is hardly appreciated externally. A group of teachers has therefore become New Patrons and wants to change the self-image of the Erwin Fischer school and its public perception in the long term. Greifswald should recognize that Schönwalde I sets an example for the school of tomorrow with an innovative educational model.

In Daniel Knorr, the patrons have found an artist of their choice to realize the art project for their school: In his works, Knorr reacts to existing places and situations, changes people's perspectives with simple ideas and thus shows them room for new action.

The Bucharest born artist, who participated in Documenta 13, among others, has long been dealing with social and political spaces without falling into the traps of expected clichés. He encounters stereotypes with wit and subversive humour and at the same time attracts a great deal of attention in an imaginative way. In Greifswald, Knorr relies heavily on direct dialogue with his clients and the school to develop ideas from the immediate local situation.
