AMANDA PIÑA: "ATLANTIC UNDERCURRENT CIRCULATION", Part 1: "FUTURE SONGS OF FISH AND PEOPLE"

The first presentation within "Citizen-Commissioned Dance and Performance" takes place on June 27, 2026, on Ummanz, near Rügen. Here, Amanda Piña will present the opening event of her three-parted piece "Atlantic Undercurrent Circulation" honoring coastal Bodden fishermen and marine life. Her work is conceived for the New Patrons of Ummanz.

Through a ceremony, a procession, and a choreography in the shallow coastal waters surrounding Ummanz, artist Amanda Piña pays tribute to the knowledge and labor of the Bodden fishermen while forging new relationships with the sea and its living beings. The work originates from a commission for a public artwork initiated by residents of Ummanz. At its center is traditional coastal fishing, which was recognized this year as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. With its disappearance, centuries-old knowledge and lived practices are also being lost.

Amanda Piña developed Future Songs of Fish and People for the New Patrons of Ummanz in collaboration with Michel Jimenez, Sinon Quilla, and Federico Protto. Together with international and local contributors — including TogetherTogether Collective, Ron Alonso Berger, Jee Chan, Angela Muñoz Martinez, members of Perform[D]ance Stralsund, and the Samtens Women’s Choir — the work will premiere on Saturday, June 27, 2026.

The event is the first part of Amanda Piña’s multi-part project Atlantic Undercurrent Circulation for the New Patrons of Ummanz. In the second part, the traces of the event will be permanently embedded in public space. In the third part, a video installation will be created that can be shown beyond Ummanz. The work is being created within the framework New Patrons: Citizen-Commissioned Dance and Performance, a program of Gesellschaft der Neuen Auftraggeber, funded by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes (German Federal Cultural Foundation).

Everyone is welcome, admission is free! Please note that photographs and video recordings, including drone footage, will be taken during the event and may capture your image. By attending the event, you consent to the use of these recordings for event communications and for the production of the resulting artistic video work.

Around 500 projects have already been commissioned in Europe. For this opening evening, we will discuss the motivations behind them, the topics that top people's lists, and how artists come up with answers to the challenges on-site. How do the projects work? How does one become a patron? Who pays for it? And how might art be able to assert itself in the midst of life as a contribution to democratic cohesion? On this first of six evenings in the “Whatever You Want!” event series in the Grüner Salon, mediators for the New Patrons report on civic projects with international artists.

Berlin's Best is an award by KREATIV KULTUR BERLIN, the advisory centre for cultural funding and creative industries in Berlin. "Tobias Asmuth retells a recent episode from the history of the small village of Blessey in the French province, how the collaboration with the world-renowned Swiss artist Rémy Zaugg changed the village and the self-confidence of its inhabitants. It is an outstanding example of the lasting effects that the NEUE AUFTRAGGEBER, which have also been funded in Germany by the Federal Cultural Foundation since spring 2017, can have." from the editorial of the magazine #31 of the Federal Cultural Foundation.
