Gesellschaft der Neuen Auftraggeber Receives Award

The Gesellschaft der Neuen Auftraggeber has won the Zukunftspreis KULTURGESTALTEN award in the “initiative and network projects” category. The award, which honors forward-thinking cultural policy initiatives and is sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, was presented yesterday.

We are extraordinarily pleased by the news that we have been honored with this award. It honors an entire network of civic associations, creative artists, and their partners, whom we at the Society of the New Patrons advise and support as they embark on ambitious projects to transform a piece of their surroundings and communities.

Developed by Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft e.V., the new award honors exemplary initiatives and outstanding projects that put forward-thinking cultural policy ideas into practice. It is designed to generate attention for innovative practices, visions, and paradigms in cultural policy and spotlight the honorees’ distinctive contributions to civil society. The award is given out every two years in the three categories “standalone projects,” “initiative and network projects,” and “(pilot) projects in municipal self-government” and comes with a total prize money of €15,000. Established in 1976, Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft e.V. (KuPoGe) is a nonpartisan alliance of individuals and organizations throughout Germany who take an active interest in cultural policy. It is the leading platform for debates around cultural policy in Germany and guided by the conviction that “cultural policy is social policy.”

“The New Patrons are an innovative and participatory model for a cultural policy that is designed to meet the sociopolitical needs of the day and facilitates a democratic production of ‘culture for all by all.’ Their approach provides a thematically open framework that allows for a discourse to be cast into concrete form, and is scalable and adaptable to a variety of contents and structures. The organization of the project’s work in several model regions throughout Germany ensures its broad-based impact,” Dr. Tobias Knoblich (president, Kulturpolitische Gesellschaft) explained the jury’s decision during yesterday’s award presentation ceremony.

“The New Patrons’ winning this prominent accolade makes us optimistic that their model project of a democratic culture aspiring to the highest standards of artistic quality will be adopted more widely in Germany as well. The Federal Cultural Foundation believes that the award acknowledges a successful partnership between art and politics in which all parties’ actions are guided by the interests of civil society.” Hortensia Völckers, artistic director, Federal Cultural Foundation.

A school class commissioned Reut Shemesh to create a work that would offer them and others a sense of security in the face of war, terror and racism around the world, while also helping them grow closer as a group. The choreographer is creating "Wild Kids" (working title), a dance film in which the young people are closely involved as patrons, dancers and dialogue partners.

What happens when children assert their right to leisure, play, and freedom of expression? And what happens when they use artistic and performative means and strategies to seek out spaces of their own in their city, claim them, and make them their own? Taking these questions as a starting point, choreographer and performer Antje Velsinger has developed a choreographic audio walk for the New Patrons of Schwelm.

In the Amberg neighborhood of Am Bergsteig, New Patrons are working towards a positive image of their neighborhood and new forms of community and solidarity for the future. For them, Julian Warner is developing “Kampf am Berg”, a spectacle featuring two wrestling shows in cooperation with local clubs and initiatives. Warner uses wrestling as a stage to make the contradictions and forces at work in the neighborhood visible and bring them into sharper focus. The event will take place in a specially constructed circus tent.

The Bergsteig quarter in Amberg loves sport—from football, mixed martial arts, boxing, and Greco-Roman wrestling to rhythmic gymnastics, people here are actively involved in local clubs and initiatives. “Kampf am Berg” brings this passion together with that of local athletes, musicians, and professional wrestlers. The people of Bergsteig themselves become hosts and authors of their own stories.

In "Ecology of Care", we draw on impulses from Sonja Leboš and Hannah Mevis to explore how social and ecological responsibility can be brought together. Care is understood here as a systemic, ethical, and political attitude that extends beyond humans to include plants, animals, and other non-human actors. Feminist and posthumanist perspectives on everyday, often invisible care work form a central focus. Kunstverein Rügen e. V. and Circus Eins Projekte present this workshop as part of "Art Living Lab to Repair the Land", a collaboration between international New Patrons initiatives.

Mediator Diana Wesser is a guest at the “Botanical Salon” of the Botanical Garden/University of Leipzig. In this edition of the Botanical Salon, participants will discuss on site how art in public space comes into being. Who commissions such works, and what possibilities do artists have to realize their ideas? How long does such a process take, and what does “public space” really mean when private interests and societal expectations come into play? Practical examples from Leipzig will illustrate these questions.
